Being physically active on the daily is one of the best things you can do for your health because it helps to control your weight, reduce your risk of cardiovascular disease, improve your mental health and mood, and greatly increase your chances of living longer.

As beneficial as exercise is, it can sometimes be a struggle to make it out to the gym everyday. Hiking is a great option to get active while being able to enjoy the natural beauty all around you. We are lucky enough to have access to a myriad of fantastic hikes in the East Bay Area.  Check out these five great options:

Robert Sibley Volcanic Regional Preserve

Located at 6800 Skyline Blvd, Oakland, (888) 327-2757, this preserve has a bit of everything that is scenic about the East Bay.  Visible from this trail are views of San Francisco, the Bay, and Mount Diablo.  Parking is free and plentiful and the bathrooms are upkept regularly. Also the Skyline trail at the preserve connects to Tilden Park which offers many trails as well. (ebparks.org/parks/sibley)

Berkeley Fire Trails

Check out these trails located in the Oakland hills at Centennial Dr, Berkeley. With many different trails to wander on as well as some steep hiking options, this hike is surely an adventurous and active one. Try to find your way to the bench made out of an old tree where the view overlooks Emeryville, Richmond, San Francisco, and a very distant Palo Alto.

Joaquin Miller Park

Located at 3450 Joaquin Miller Rd, Oakland, (510) 238-7275, this park provides many opportunities for moderate hilly hiking and biking.  There are various vantage points that present spectacular views of Oakland and the entire Bay Area. Just be careful of the spotty cell phone coverage, although it does provide a “break” from civilization.

Claremont Canyon Regional Preserve

Located at Stonewall Rd, Oakland, (888) 327-2757, this preserve offers steep hiking opportunities as well as more relaxed trails. The first bench offers a spectacular view and you can head back down if you like. If you want a challenge then keep going, the second bench is right after a challenging hill. A tip is to wear hiking shoes or shoes with grip as the trail is a bit slippery. (http://www.ebparks.org/parks/claremont_canyon)

Martin Canyon Creek Trail

Try out this peaceful trail located at 11538-11574 Bay Laurel St, Dublin. This is a moderately challenging hike that starts off in a residential neighborhood and quickly turns into an enchanted forest. With a mostly shaded trail and an upkept walking road, this hike is perfect for a pleasant escape to nature.
