A Functional Mushroom in Your Coffee? Mmmmm | Earthly Nutrition

Four Sigmatic makes a unique Lion’s Mane functional mushroom coffee blend.  Lion’s Mane is a functional mushroom that gets its name because it looks like a shaggy beard, or a lion’s mane.  People have used this functional mushroom for hundreds of years as a food and medicine.  People used it for heart and circulatory system health, improve digestion, reduce inflammation, improve immunity function and much more.  In addition, recent Lion’s Mane research has shown promise in helping with many modern day diseases.  For example, scientific research has shown it can help with Alzheimer’s, blood sugar support, cancer, heart health, liver function and nerve protective.  It seems that this funny looking shroom can do it all.  Paired in this formula with coffee, chaga mushroom, and the adaptogenic herb rhodiola, Lion’s Mane Coffee is a great idea for anyone interested in a more functional coffee drink.

Tero Isokauppilam, president of Four Sigmatic, states that the Lion’s Mane is the only mushroom that can support the brain.  This is why many functional mushroom lovers often refer to it as the “smart mushroom.”  For example, Lion’s Mane research has also shown that it can support cognition, concentration and memory.

Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is an intermediate stage of between normal age-related cognitive decline and dementia.  People diagnosed with MCI increases the risk of developing Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia later in life.  In one clinical study, seniors with MCI were given 3 grams of dried lion’s mane mushroom powder for 16 weeks.  At the end of the study, the participants’ cognitive function scores had improved significantly with no adverse side effects.  Certain plaques in the brain are an biomarker of Alzheimer’s disease and there’s evidence lion’s mane can break them up.  Mice that were fed a diet that included lion’s mane showed a remarkable reduction in these toxic brain plaques (source).

Isokauppilam continues by stating that, “When your nerve cells are growing well and protected properly, they operate best. The NGF growth stimulated by Lion’s Man can help maintain the function and the size of the forebrain, which is where most of our decision-making, analytical thought, and memory processes occur.”
